Year 2: Titanic Day:
This half term, Year 2 have been learning all about the Titanic! We began by exploring historical sources, including adverts, photographs and quotes, to make inferences about the ship. Using these sources, we discussed what the Titanic might have been like and why it was considered so special.
As our learning progressed, we discovered that life on board the Titanic was very different depending on whether passengers travelled in first, second or third class. We compared and contrasted the experiences of different passengers and used pictures and evidence to sort areas of the ship into the correct classes. We were surprised to learn that our first impressions of the Titanic being luxurious for everyone were only partly correct!
We also investigated what passengers ate on board by exploring menus from different classes. This helped us understand more about daily life and how experiences varied depending on wealth and status. Throughout the topic, we have used historical sources to infer and deduce information, helping us make judgements about why the Titanic was significant. We have discussed the different causes of the disaster and thought carefully about cause and effect. We have even written in role as passengers, imagining what life was like on the ship and describing events from their perspective.
To celebrate our learning, we went to the Sea City Museum on Wednesday (see our other blog post!) and on Friday enjoyed a fantastic Titanic Dress-Up Day on Friday. It was wonderful to see everyone dressed as passengers and crew members - don't they look fantastic?! We had a brilliant time bringing history to life and sharing all the knowledge we have gained about the Titanic. We are incredibly proud of all the enthusiasm, curiosity and historical thinking shown throughout this topic. Well done Year 2!
