STEM Ambassadors:
STEM Ambassadors had a fantastic day at Calshot Activities Centre, where they took part in an exciting Marine Exploration Workshop led by expert marine biologists.
Our adventure began on the beach, where we became real-life marine explorers! Armed with buckets, we searched the shoreline for living creatures and fascinating treasures that had washed ashore. Along the way, we discovered a variety of shells, sea snails, crabs and even a jellyfish.
Did you know there are two main types of shells?
Gastropods – such as whelks and periwinkles, which have a single shell.
Bivalves – such as clams and scallops, which have two hinged shells.
We sorted our shell collections into groups and discussed how different marine creatures have adapted over thousands of years to survive in their environments.
Next, we explored the different habitats found beneath the sea. We learned about the importance of seagrass meadows, the role of oyster populations in keeping our seas healthy, and the exciting conservation work taking place to help restore native oysters along our coastline.
Throughout the day, our STEM Ambassadors asked thoughtful questions, worked collaboratively and enjoyed learning directly from professional marine biologists. It was wonderful to see our learning about the United Nations Global Goal 14: Life Below Water come to life. We discussed the ways we can all help to protect our oceans and the incredible plants and animals that call them home.
It was an inspiring day filled with discovery, curiosity and hands-on learning. Our STEM Ambassadors returned to school with a greater understanding of marine ecosystems and plenty of ideas about how we can all play our part in protecting life below water.
