Year 6 blog:

Year 6 Science

Year 6 have made a fantastic start to their new Science topic all about classification!

To get us thinking like scientists, we began with a very lively game of ‘Who Am I?’ Each child had a post-it note with the name of a living thing and had to work out what they were by asking carefully chosen questions. The challenge was to use questions that would help narrow down the possibilities, such as: Do I have a backbone? Do I have wings? Do I live in water? Am I a mammal?

Once everyone had discovered their identity, the children then had to decide where they belonged and how they could be grouped with other living things. This led to lots of brilliant scientific discussion about similarities, differences and the characteristics we can use to classify organisms.

Through the activity, Year 6 began to explore how scientists organise living things into groups based on shared features. We talked about some of the major groups of animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates, and considered how asking the right questions can help us identify and classify different species.

There was plenty of laughter along the way, but also some excellent scientific thinking! It was a fun and memorable way to introduce our new topic and get everyone thinking carefully about how living things can be sorted, grouped and identified.

We’re looking forward to becoming classification experts over the coming weeks!
