We found an abandoned nest - unfortunately it had been covered over with a plant pot for an indefinite period of time and it had four tiny eggs inside! We marvelled at the construction of the nest and how miniscule the eggs were! The children asked if there were baby birds inside and could we still hatch them. We discussed what baby birds need and how we could have incubated them had we found them sooner. We also used torches to confirm if they were fertilised or not... we all said a big phew as they were NOT fertilised. We speculated that perhaps the Mummy bird had laid these as a test run! We are still researching what type of bird may have laid them... so far we are thinking it was a ground nesting bird, perhaps a blackbird? What do you think?
