JRSO blog:

'Many of us are trying to walk to school but we don’t feel that we can use this crossing. It feels dangerous. People are zooming. We want it to be safe.'

Millie, JRSO

Following our survey regarding the crossing on Ramley Road; 92% of you felt that a crossing on Ramley Road was important and 92% were pleased to hear that a crossing was being installed this year to support safety of our local community.

It is interesting to note, that 92% of you are not pleased with the new crossing and 84% of you feel that the crossing is not safe or practical. Many of you named other local schools that have a safe crossing installed and feel frustrated and disappointed. Our JRSO’s will be constructing a letter to the council and our local councillors to discuss the matter and raise these urgent issues. We encourage you to also contact them yourselves to spark a review of this crossing.

Read on to hear a sample of the feedback we have received:

  • When the news of the crossing came, it was a relief to finally know there would be a safe place to cross. As a driver the crossing is not clear.

  • It has not made a difference to the speed or flow of traffic.

  • Many children now need to come by car. We should be encouraging families to come by foot or bike. The work is disappointing.

  • Please can we have a properly defined crossing to keep our children safe.

  • Cars do not slow, they speed to fit and the gap is smaller.

  • There is not signage to suggest priority or one car at a time.

  • The crossing has not made it safer.

  • The crossing is ineffectual.

  • Cars do not slow, they speed to fit and the gap is smaller.

  • Why was a zebra crossing not installed?

  • Why were speed bumps not used?

  • The crossing is ambiguous. The wooden posts are smaller than the previous ones and it is not clear. There are not highly visible markings or signage. Signs around are hidden by overhanging branches.
