Year R blog:

Year R visit from St Barbe Museum

Year R were absolutely thrilled to welcome Christina, a volunteer from St Barbe Museum, who brought along a fascinating collection of old and modern toys for a special History workshop.

The children began by sorting toys into old and new and thinking carefully about what they noticed. Christina showed us some wonderful antique toys, including a wooden china doll and a wooden Noah’s ark. We talked about how these toys were similar to some of the toys children still enjoy playing with today, even though the materials and designs were sometimes very different.

Working in groups, the children then explored what different toys were made from. They used their senses to touch, look closely and describe a range of materials, making thoughtful guesses and sharing their ideas with one another.

At the end of the workshop, everyone had the chance to explore and play with a selection of both historic and modern-day toys. There were lots of smiles and plenty of curiosity. The Jack-in-the-box was definitely a favourite!

A huge thank you to Christina and St Barbe Museum for bringing history to life in such an engaging and memorable way for our Year R children.
