Year 1 Pip and Pap Phonics Workshop

Year 1 parents and pupils read Pip and Pap Phonics Book "Mas has an Itch!" together today, in their parent and child workshop!

They recapped the grapheme phoneme correspondences:

'ay' /ai/ - in words such as 'away' and 'playing'

'ou' /ow/ - in words such as 'couch' and 'about'

'ie' /igh/ - in words such as 'lies' and 'tries'

'ea' /ee/ - in words such as 'fleas' and 'reaches'

They read sentences such as "Mrs Meab hands Mas a treat and picks up some flea cream from the counter," and "Rub the cream on Mas each day, then the fleas will go away," with excellent fluency and expression.

Children read the story beautifully to their parents, before answering questions about the story  - including making predictions and inferences, as well as sequencing the story and explaining the meanings of the words they came across.

In the story, Mas the dog has fleas! He has to go to the vets, for some special itching cream! Parents and pupils talked together about what to do in the event of an insect bite or sting.

Then, they made their own 'creepy crawlies' - using pegs, pipe cleaners and pom poms - aren't they fabulous?

We run Pip and Pap workshops every other week, in Years R-2 - please ask your child's class teacher for more details!
