Year 6 blog:
Year 6 recently enjoyed a memorable and educational visit to The D-Day Story as part of their ongoing learning about World War II.
The trip brought their classroom studies to life, giving pupils the opportunity to explore powerful real-life stories, artefacts, and interactive exhibits. As part of the “Life in World War Two Britain” experience, children handled real WW2 objects alongside expert Learning Facilitators and developed their understanding of key topics such as rationing, “Make Do and Mend”, evacuation, and how the bombings in Portsmouth and Hampshire shaped daily life.
From learning about the planning of the D-Day Landings to understanding the experiences of soldiers and civilians, the children were fully engaged throughout the visit. They also explored the museum’s fantastic displays, including the impressive 60-metre-long Landing Craft Tank even had the exciting opportunity to go on board the landing craft themselves, bringing history to life in a truly immersive way!
One of the highlights of the day was discovering the remarkable Overlord Embroidery, a detailed and fascinating hand-stitched artwork that helped pupils visualise the scale and significance of the events of June 1944. The immersive displays encouraged thoughtful discussions and deepened their understanding of the sacrifices made during the war.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to reflect on the importance of remembrance and the impact of historical events on the world we live in today. Staff were incredibly proud of the children, who showed great curiosity, respect and enthusiasm throughout the day.
It was a truly enriching experience that will support their learning back in the classroom and remain a lasting memory for all who attended. Well done Year 6!
