Year R
Year R Phonics
Year R have been working so hard on their phonics, developing their early reading and writing skills! They have now moved on to the 'Pink Phase' of the Pip and Pap Phonics programme - having already learned 23 grapheme-phoneme correspondences in the Orange Phase!
As part of their phonics learning, pupils learn to recognise graphemes (letters) and their corresponding sounds, for example recognising that the letters 'ck' make the /k/ sound. They are using their knowledge to sound out and blend words to read them, such as 'd-u-ck' makes 'duck'! They are also working very hard on their letter formation and have now met all the letters of the alphabet, enabling them to write simple words.
Pupils partake in a phonics lesson every morning in small groups, to practise both reading and writing skills, as well as a guided reading lesson each day, where pupils apply their phonics knowledge to sound out and blend words within their book.
Many of our pupils have been inspired by our recent book "The Din", to make their own musical instruments during 'busy bee' time!
Look how much fun we have been having with our phonics and reading in the photographs below! Don't forget, we run a Pip and Pap Phonics workshop every other week at OLSJ to support parents with phonics and early reading skills, ask Miss Taylor for more details.
