Year 2 Trip to Marwell Zoo: A Wild Adventure!

What an amazing day we had! The sun was shining, the animals were out, and we couldn’t have asked for a better day to explore the zoo with our wonderful Year 2 class. I’m so proud of how well everyone behaved and how curious and excited the children were as we explored the zoo.

The Journey Begins!

Our adventure started with an early morning departure from school. The excitement was already building as we boarded the minibus. Arlo was already asking about the zebra’s, Eddie couldn’t stop talking about the tigers, and Charlie was trying to guess which animals we might see first. Mia, Holly, and Caitlin were talking about their animal spotting strategies, while Emily, Ben, and Millie were busy chatting about which animals they hoped would be the most exciting!

It didn’t take long before we arrived at Marwell Zoo, and the first thing we noticed was the wide variety of animals on the map – we were in for a treat!

Animal Encounters

As we walked through the gates, the first stop was the giraffes. Chloe and George were amazed at how tall they were! We all stood in awe as the giraffes gracefully moved around, nibbling on the leaves high up in the trees. Ethan was particularly fascinated by how their long necks reached so far. We all stood in front of the measuring board to see if we were as tall as a giraffe! No chance!!

Next, we ventured to the zebra enclosure. Oliwia and Charlotte were excited to see them up so close, while Theo giggled as one of the zebras came right up to the glass!

After the zebras, we visited the meerkats. The meerkats were definitely one of the highlights of the trip. They were curiously looking around, scurrying between rocks, and having a great time. Ethan tried to mimic them looking around, and I think they thought he was one of them!

Lunch and Playtime

By lunchtime, we had seen so many incredible animals. But, of course, it was time for a well-deserved break! We had a picnic in a lovely spot near the play area, and everyone enjoyed their sandwiches, cake, and fruit.

Tropical House and Snow Leopard

In the afternoon, we went to the tropical house for a workshop. The children were so excited! Arlo, Eddie, and Charlie were eager to see the animal bones, and they weren’t disappointed when we saw a humongous snake skin!

After that we had time to quickly take a peek at the snow leopard. He was laying majestically on a rock ledge, looking at us all. Ms Funnell even saw him lick his lips as he gazed at us!

Time to Head Home

Our journey back to school was a quiet one, with everyone reflecting on their favourite animals and chatting about what they had learned.

It was such a fantastic day, and I’m so grateful to have shared it with such a wonderful group of children.

I hope everyone is still talking about their favourite animals at home, and I can’t wait to see how much the children have learned about the creatures we saw on our trip.
