Year 5 Boy at The Back of the Class
Year 5 enjoyed a memorable trip to MAST Studios to watch a live performance of The Boy at the Back of the Class. The story is a familiar and much-loved one for our pupils, as it was a text they studied and read during Year 4.
Seeing the story brought to life on stage was a wonderful experience for the children. The performance captured the powerful messages of the book and it was fantastic for pupils to experience live theatre and storytelling in such an engaging way.
The themes of the story, which centre around Ahmet, a refugee from Syria who is new to the UK, and his new friends at school; are particularly meaningful for our school community. As a proud School of Sanctuary, the messages of kindness, empathy and welcoming others strongly reflect our values. The story also links closely to Global Goal 10 – Reducing Inequalities, encouraging children to think about fairness, safety and inclusion and how we can support people who may be new to our communities.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the performance and were excited to see characters and moments from the book they had loved brought to life on stage. It was a brilliant opportunity to connect their learning with a real theatre experience, and a trip that will certainly be remembered.
