Year 3 blog:

Year 3 had a fantastic day of outdoor learning at Minstead Study Centre, where we became rock detectives, soil investigators and fossil hunters! The children had the opportunity to explore the natural world, investigate different materials and discover how rocks, soil and fossils are all connected.

We began the day by thinking about what we already knew about rocks. Where might we find them? What are they made from? Where do they come from? The children shared lots of brilliant ideas, recognising that rocks can be found in all sorts of places, from beaches and mountains to the ground beneath our feet.

Next, we got hands-on with our very own rock mystery bags! Using only their sense of touch, the children tried to identify different rocks without looking inside the bags. We then became Rock Detectives, using hand lenses to examine a range of rock samples, including chalk, granite and sandstone. We looked carefully at their colours, textures and patterns, discovering that not all rocks are the same!

Working in groups, the children then put their detective skills to the test by creating sorting charts. They carefully classified their rock samples using different properties, such as whether they were smooth or rough, hard or soft, and light or dark.

After a well-deserved break, it was time to become Soil Investigators! We explored different soil samples, using magnifiers to look closely at what was hiding inside. We discussed whether soil is alive and discovered that it is made up of a mixture of tiny rock particles, organic matter, water, air and living organisms.

One of the highlights of the day was making our very own compost cakes! Following a special recipe, the children combined different ingredients to explore how compost is made and why it takes time for materials to break down. We also thought about what the world might be like without soil and why it is so important for plants, animals and people.

Fossils was the topic of the afternoon. We examined pictures and examples of fossils, discussing how they might have formed inside rocks millions of years ago. The children investigated fossil replicas, using clues to work out which animals or plants they might have come from. We even explored the difference between body fossils, such as bones and shells, and trace fossils, such as footprints.

It was a brilliant day full of curiosity, teamwork and hands-on discovery. The children thoroughly enjoyed becoming scientists for the day and building on their classroom learning in such a practical way. A huge thank you to the team at Minstead Study Centre for providing such an exciting and memorable experience for Year 3!
