Hampshire Air Ambulance Assembly
We were delighted to welcome Martin from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for a very special whole-school assembly.
Martin spoke to the children about the vital work of the Air Ambulance team and how they help people who are critically ill or seriously injured across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Their specialist doctors, paramedics, pilots and dispatchers provide life-saving critical care 365 days a year, responding by helicopter and emergency response vehicle to incidents such as cardiac arrests, road traffic collisions, serious falls and other medical emergencies. The charity relies on public support to help keep this vital service running.
Our assembly also linked beautifully to Global Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing, which is all about helping people to live healthy lives and access the care they need. The work of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is a powerful local example of this goal in action, showing how skilled medical teams, rapid response and emergency care can save lives and support the health and well-being of people in our community.
Martin also introduced us to what3words and explained why knowing exactly where you are can be so important in an emergency. what3words divides the world into small 3 metre squares, with each square given its own unique combination of three words. This can help emergency services pinpoint a location much more accurately, especially in places such as forests, beaches, fields or other areas without a clear street address.
It certainly gave us something to think about: Do you know exactly where your house is? What about if you were out on a walk in the countryside?
The children came away with a much better understanding of the extraordinary work of our local Air Ambulance and how teamwork, specialist skills, technology and quick thinking can all combine to save lives.
A huge thank you to Martin and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for such an interesting and inspiring visit!
