Blue Cross - Remembrance Day

Year 5/6 children enjoyed a virtual talk from the Blue Cross today, focusing on Animals in War.

The talk discussed why we have a purple poppy - it is for all animals that served during a war.

Did you know that horses, camels, mules and donkeys were used to carry food, water, medical supplies and ammunition? Cats and dogs were used to hunt rats in the trenches. Canaries were used to detect poisonous gases, pigeons were used to carry messages across Europe. Did you know that the 'pigeon branch' of British Intelligence was actually called "M.I.14" during the war? As part of our Remembrance Assembly tomorrow, we will also remember all animals that have served in war.
